Mr Monkey found out that Granada TV started in 1956 when Sidney Bernstein (who ran a cinema chain down south) decided he'd rather have a TV station in Manchester than anywhere else in the country, even if some of the reasons were a little sarcastic*. Mr Monkey examined stills from early Granada programming and was impressed to see that the company logo reminded viewers that Granada came from the north and helpfully included an arrow to show which way was north.
* For example "If you look at a map of the concentration of population in the North and a rainfall map, you will see that the North is an ideal place for television." (Sidney Bernstein).
