Mr Monkey scampered along the seafront, looking forward to the setting sun and back to see ferries crossing the Sound. He also stopped to read plaques made by the local history people which explained that the original 24 settlers of Seattle landed on this side of the water before changing their minds and crossing to the other side. Some of them thought it would be a good idea to call the new town 'New York', and a sarcastic person added alki, a Chinook word meaning by and by. When they noticed that the new city was going to be Seattle, across the bay, they quietly dropped the New York bit of the name.
