Still in Germany Mr Monkey admired the 16th century fortified gateway from Soest, though he did wonder if there should have been quite so many shrubs in front of it. He was more impressed by the Porta Nigra of Trier, a Roman gateway from 180AD that was turned into a church in the 11th century.
