Looking at the west side of the square Mr Monkey admired the Provincial Hof, home of the Provincial Government, built on the site of the 13th century cloth halls. After admiring the figure of St Michael on the roof, Mr Monkey studied the monument to Jan Breydel and Pieter de Coninck. They were leaders of the "Bruges Matins" of May 1302 when a Flemish militia went round Bruges one morning killing all the French speakers, and also fought at Kortrijk in July 1302 when a French army was defeated.
You can read about the Bruges Matins and the Battle of Courtrai at the De Leibaart website.
