Mr Monkey visits Somerset House, 12th January

"It's not bad looking for an office block, really"

Mr Monkey arrived at the wing of Somerset house which runs along the Embankment, and was originally home to the Navy Board. In the basement he looked at a display about the history of Somerset House and the buildings which preceded it on the site. He visited the Gilbert Collection, which was being packed up ready for its move to the Victoria and Albert Museum, then went out onto the terrace outside Somerset House to look at the Thameside facade of the building. The high archway marks the point where the original building is joined to a later wing added in the 19th century.
