Mr Monkey swarmed up the steps to the half deck in the stern. Drake would have steered the ship with a whipstaff (a long pole), but the replica uses a wheel for safety's sake. Mr Monkey couldn't go up onto the poop deck, where Drake sat painting nearby seashores, because there wasn't a ladder. So he went into the captain's cabin, the only private space aboard the ship, and inspected Drake's navigational equipment and painting of the queen.
