Mr Monkey visits China Landscape at the British Museum, 16th May

"That mulberry is another important plant"

Mr Monkey had a look at a dawn redwood (metasequoia glyptostroboides), a species 50 million years old. It was identified and thought to be extinct in 1941, but turned out to be living in China all the time. Mr Monkey peered at a white mulberry (morus alba} whose leaves are eaten by silkworms. Silk has been spun from silkworm cocoons for 4000 years, and the leaves of the mulberry are used to cure colds and sore eyes. Mr Monkey knew he was supposed to stay on the path, so he didn't go round the mulberry bush.
