Before he checked out of his hotel, the Newcastle Quayside Premier Inn, Mr Monkey peered out of the window to see the green balustrades of the Tyne Bridge towering above the hotel. Then he went out onto the Quayside, and read a plaque that told him that the hotel was in the Exchange Building. This was originally a place for ship owners to meet, built in 1861-2 on the site of buildings burned down in the great Gateshead fire of 1854.
