At the western end of the bridge Mr Monkey admired the tollbooths, which were built in a supposedly Egyptian style. He listened to a talk about the bridge and was surprised to find out that the western end was slightly higher than the east, and that the abutments holding the piers up were hollow. He also learned that the design of the piers was different at the different ends, but he couldn't see quite how.
