Mr Monkey in Chester, 8th December

"That was an interesting afternoon"

Mr Monkey in front of the Cheshire regiment at Monte Gemmano Mr Monkey outside the Cheshire Military Museum at dusk

Mr Monkey scurried through Chester until he got to the Cheshire Military Museum. He spent the afternoon learning about the history of five regiments* raised or based in Cheshire. He examined documents, paintings, drawings, photographs, posters, models, weapons, and uniforms. He even saw the wide collection of tin boxes a Victorian officer kept his hats and plumes in, and crept though a Great War trench to peer through a periscope into No-Man's Land. He confirmed that Miss Carol's ancestor was in the 22nd, as well.

* The 22nd (Cheshire) regiment, the Cheshire Yeomanry, the 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards, the 3rd Carabiniers and the Mercian Regiment.

You can read about the museum at the Cheshire Military Museum website.

Photography isn't allowed inside the museum, so the first picture shows Mr Monkey standing in front of David Rowland's painting of the 6th Battalion at Monte Gemmano from the cover of From the Boyne to Basra (published by the Cheshire Military Museum).
