Mr Monkey takes a Mancunian Canal Cruise, 13th October

"We're not sinking, we're descending"

The L.S. Lowry made a rather sharp right turn and sailed into the lock. When the gates were shut behind it handles were turned and sluices opened, and Mr Monkey started to go down. The first connection between the Bridgewater and the Irwell was the Hulme Lock Branch starting at Egerton Street in Manchester and a whole 0.1 of a mile long, built in 1838. The current connection, which opens into Pomona Dock No. 3, was built in 1995. After about seven minutes, the lower lockgates opened, and Mr Monkey was ready to enter the Pomona docks.
