Mr Monkey arrived at the east end of the Reading Room (which is now called the Historic Reading Room to avoid confusion with the reading rooms in the extension). He examined John Cassidy's statue of Mrs Rylands, which stands beneath a magnificent stained glass window by Charles Eamer Kempe. The window shows a wide selection of giants of secular culture including Aristotle, Beethoven and Dante. When he'd failed to recognize most of the people in the stained glass, Mr Monkey turned and set off, past the cases for temporary exhibitions, to the other end of the Reading Room.
You can read about Charles Eamer Kempe at the Churchmouse website.
