Lock 92 was built by the Rochdale Canal Company, but was owned by the Duke of Bridgewater as a condition of giving them access to his canal. When the tunnel from Deansgate was shortened to allow the canal to be widened for more traffic, and to make space beside the canal for warehouses, a cottage was built for the keeper of Lock 92. Further along the towpath Mr Monkey admired the contrast between the remains of an old factory and the newish Beetham Tower.
