Mr Monkey walks the Rochdale Canal through Manchester

Trip date : 4th May, 2011
"You'd think they'd know what their own tunnel was called"

Mr Monkey approaching the Deansgate tunnel Mr Monkey examining the plaque above the Gaythorn tunnel

Scampering along Mr Monkey arrived at the Deansgate Tunnel. Before going through the tunnel he made a little diversion, nipping up the walkway to Deansgate where he crossed to the other end of the tunnel. Here he examined a plaque about the reconstruction of the tunnel in 1902, only to find out that the Manchester Corporation thought they'd restored the Gaythorn Tunnel, not the Deansgate Tunnel, probably because the section of Whitworth Street West between Deansgate and Albion Street used to be called Gaythorn Street.
