Mr Monkey arrived in the dial chamber, where he could look through little doors and see the back of the clock faces. Here a drive shaft comes up through the floor to turn the hands of all four faces of the clock. The clock faces were originally intended to be illuminated by gas lights, but they didn't work properly so candles were used until electricity was laid on in 1936. Mr Monkey was a little vexed to find that the hands of the clock were so big - the dials are 15 foot 9 inches across - and the view through the door so limited that he couldn't actually see what time it was.
