The first big monument Mr Monkey saw in the garden was the Burdett-Coutts memorial sundial, which was unveiled in 1879 by Baroness Burdett-Coutts. She was a great philanthropist, who tried to get rid of London's slums, which led to her being the first woman to be given a life peerage.
