At the bottom of the slope is the surviving mill. It started as a grist mill, was converted into a paper mill, then became a brickworks and ended up as a riding school. Now it's a theatre (in the white bit) and a gallery (in the brick bit). Mr Monkey saw and enjoyed an exhibition of costumes from the Peking Opera. The mill looks like it's in a hole because the land around it has been artificially heightened as a form of flood defence.
