There's a wide range of classically inspired monuments on top of Carlton Hill. The one on the right would have been a copy of Athen's Parthenon, to commemorate the Scottish dead from the Napoleonic wars, except that they needed £42,000 and could only raise £16,000. So they stopped building it and decided it was a National Monument.
