Scurrying down the steps, Mr Monkey was surprised to find himself in a secret passage beneath the castle. He crept down the steep tunnel, which came out through a sally port in the dry ditch that used to surround the castle. The castle's defenders would creep out in the night to raid the attackers, who apparently wouldn't have noticed a door in the ditch.
