Mr Monkey in York, August 9th

"It's very quiet in here"

Mr Monkey in the shrine of Margaret Clitherow Mr Monkey in the shrine of Margaret Clitherow

Mr Monkey went into Number 10, a peaceful respite from the bustle of the Shambles. This is a shrine to Margaret Clitherow, the Pearl of York, who converted to Catholism in 1574 and was crushed to death for being a Catholic in 1586*. She didn't actually live in this building, but they thought she did when they built the shrine.

You can read about the shrine at the Sacred Destinations website.

* The same year the Babington plot again Elizabeth I was discovered.
