Mr Monkey scampered along 2nd Avenue until he got to the 522 foot high Smith Tower. When this was finished in 1914 it was the world's tallest office building outside New York, and remained the tallest building west of the Mississippi for nearly 50 years. The exterior is white terra-cotta, except the first two floors which are of Washington granite. Each of the 540 offices had two telephone outlets, two telegraph outlets, 650 watts of electricity and its own vacuum cleaner.
You can read about the tower at the Smith Tower website.
