Mr Monkey scurried down a steep set of steps and slopes to the base of the aqueduct. He stood beside the piers of the aqueduct and looked through one of the arches at the viaduct further along the valley. Then he scampered under the arch and looked back at the other side of the aqueduct. The circular cut-outs between the arches were put there by the engineer, Benjamin Outram, to reduce the weight of the masonry and reduce the load on the arches without weakening the structure.
