Part of the miller's job used to include drying grain. This was done by spreading the grain on the floor of a room (which no longer exists) above the drying oven. Heat from the oven would pass through tiny perforations in the floor tiles. Mr Monkey was aware that the tunnel he was in would have been really hot when the kiln was in use, and just paused for a moment to examine the bare rock on the floor before scampering out.
