Mr Monkey was intending to visit Fairfax House, a fine Georgian town house, and he was a little surprised to find that the entrance was through the facade of an Art Deco cinema. Viscount Fairfax paid about £2000 for the house in 1760, and a further £8000 refurbishing it as a dowry for his daughter (who never married). Mr Monkey enjoyed scamperimg around the house which, after being used as part of a cinema and then a dance hall, has been magnificently restored by the York Civic Trust.
Photography isn't allowed inside the house, but they've put a nice big photo of the saloon outside the door, so Mr Monkey posed with that.
You can read about the house at the Fairfax House website and about the Trust at the York Civic Trust website.
