A little further on, Mr Monkey came to Lock 89 and the junction between the Rochdale canal and what used to be the Manchester and Salford Junction canal. Mr Monkey had visited the the remains of the canal (which are under the Great Northern complex) when he took an Underground Manchester tour in 2010, so he knew that it linked the Rochdale canal to the river Irwell. It wasn't a totally successful link because the Duke of Bridgewater made a connection between the Bridgewater Canal and the Irwell at Hulme the year before the M&SJ opened. Mr Monkey also spotted the little opening that drains excess water from the canal away into the river Tib, which Mancunians keep safely underground.
