Mr Monkey went down to the river and decided to cross, just to have a ride in the chain ferry. This is a sort of raft attached to the river by a chain going from bank to bank. The chain is wrapped round a pulley and cog on the side of the ferry, so that when someone who knows how to do it properly turns the handle, the ferry is pulled across the river. Mr Monkey sat quietly in the boat as the ferryman took him to the other side.
