Mr Monkey left the fortress and went to investigate the defensive works outside. He ran up onto the ramparts, and investigated some artillery that had been left there. Nya Elfsborg had about ninety of these in 1719, with a garrison of four hundred men, when Colonel Lillie defended the fortress against a Danish fleet. The Danes landed some cannon on the small island near to the fortress, but were eventually driven off after a twenty eight hour fight.
