"It's amazingly clean for an engine"

Mr Monkey underneath the Caerphilly Castle Mr Monkey underneath the Caerphilly Castle

Noticing that there was an inspection pit beneath the locomotive, Mr Monkey scampered underneath the Caerphilly Castle. Built in August 1923, and used until 1960, this was the first of 171 Castle class locomotives. Mr Monkey suspected someone had tidied up the underside of the locomotive, because nothing dripped on him as he scurried beneath 126 tons of machinery.

You can read about Castle class locomotives at the Great Western Archive.
