Mr Monkey in Chester, May 27th

"We'll just pop in for a drink, shall we?"

Mr Monkey outside the Bear and Billet The sign outside the Bear and Billet

Mr Monkey scampered back to Bridge Street. His humans were complaining about hunger and thirst again, so he let them have a rather pleasant snack and some Welsh beer at the Bear and Billet. This was built in 1664 as the townhouse of the Earls of Shrewsbury, Serjeants of the Bridgegate. A couple of years later the Earl, Francis Talbot, sold his rights to charge travellers for using the gate to the corporation of Chester. That got him £200, which could have come in useful.
