Mr Monkey visits Staircase House and the Stockport Story, 10th August

"Some of that cloth is as a soft as a monkey's velvety paw"

Mr Monkey scurried into the linen chamber, which is full of ornately carved linen presses (which looked like cupboards to Mr Monkey). It's been set out as if a cloth merchant had come round to show the Shallcross family the latest fashionable materials. Heavy wool and linen cloth was produced in Stockport from the early 1600s, but there are also examples of finer textiles imported from Asia and India by the East India Company. Mr Monkey inspected the different sorts of material, and scampered into the next room.
