In the tallow room, Mr Monkey found out all about the way the house was illuminated in the 17th century. He examined tallow candles and beeswax candles, and the candlesticks and lanterns they'd go in. He was interested to see they had three sorts of lantern, one made from linen wrapped around a wooden frame, one with almost transparent panes made from animal horns, and a third sort made from metal with tiny crescent cut-outs. Mr Monkey had seen the last sort down in the cold room, only with electric lights inside instead of a candle.
