Mr Monkey explored the inside of the caponier. He found out that all there really was to a caponier was thick walls with a lot of gunslits. Two of the caponiers had rudimentary toilets, and the others had buckets. Mr Monkey was interested to find some modern looking metal steps in a chamber at the outer wall end of the caponier; these were put in by the Germans in the Second World War as part of an escape shaft into the sand dunes.
