Mr Monkey visits Prague Castle, 11th June

"It looks a little odd because they built the walls around the arch"

Mr Monkey set off into Prague Castle. He went through the Giant's Gate into the First Courtyard. This used to be a deep gully, but was filled in and surrounded by elegant Viennese style buildings in the mid 18th century when the Hapsburgs started turning the fortress into a palace. Mr Monkey looked up at the Matthias Gate, originally a free-standing triumphal arch put up in 1618, and admired the carving showing the title and arms of Matthias, Holy Roman Emperor between 1612 and 1619.

You can read about the castle at the Pražský hrad website.
