Mr Monkey went down another level into the orlop, below the waterline. He looked around the boatswain's and carpenter's storerooms, then scurried down another set of stairs into the hold. Here he found his way into the grand magazine where he inspected the elaborate precautions intended to prevent 35 tons of gunpowder exploding. These included lining the magazine walls with lead, plaster and copper, putting strips of leather between all the barrels, and keeping all the lanterns outside the magazine.
