Mr Monkey takes a Mancunian Canal Cruise, 13th October

The trip started by passing under the four railway viaducts (listed below) that cross the Castlefield Basin. Mr Monkey gazed up at the interesting mixture of brick and iron where the lines run close together, and admired the arches of the Manchester, South Junction and Altrincham line to Altrincham.

The viaducts, from north to south:

Manchester, South Junction & Altrincham Railway viaduct, Salford branch, built 1848-9.
Great Northern viaduct, built 1894 by the Great Northern railway to serve the Great Northern Warehouse*
Cornbrook Viaduct, built 1877 by the Midland Railway for the Cheshire Lines Committee.

* Obviously, the Great Northern had a strong sense of branding. Or weren't very good at thinking up new names.
