Mr Monkey sees a memorial in Preston, 27th April

"I think I prefer the maquette, you know"

When Mr Monkey visited Preston to see the National Football Museum before it moved to Manchester, he scampered down Lune Street. He was surprised to see that the statue outside the old Corn Exchange was rather different from the maquette in the People's History Museum. Gordon Young's statue is a memorial to George Sowerbutts, Bernard McNamara, John Mercer and William Lancaster who were shot for striking* by the 72nd Highlanders on August 13th, 1842.

You can read about the 1842 General Strike at the Chartists.net website, about the Preston riots at National Archives website and about Gordon Young at the Gordon Young website.

* And for throwing large numbers of cobblestones at the 72nd Highlanders.
